Hi All,

Have tried to find a divorce on Ancestry but cannot seem to locate any divorces on there, I'm sure I have before???

Is there anywhere else I could look? Divorce was somewhere between 1940 and 1945?? |help||banghead|

Many Thanks

:D

Have a read of this TNA Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=53) and you will find search instructions in section 3. :)

Hi

Have you checked the London Gazette online? There are divorce notices listed. It won't give you the background of the divorce but will give you the date.

Simply typing 'London Gazette' into a search engine will bring it up.

The URL is here: London Gazette (http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/)

I suggest keeping searches simple, try beginning with a surname within a set period of time; if that throws back too many hits then refine the search by adding a forename and possibly reviewing the time period over which you search.

Thanks for that site Geoffers:o Alot of information can be found...looks like I'm in for many hours of reading.

I found basic divorce details by chance. I had 'googled' John Beckett, one of the names I was researching, and one of the links brought up took me to TNA, I then followed links to details of his divorce.
Good luck.

Thx Janiceb, you def must have got lucky I googled and have had no such luck I'm beginning to wonder if they did indeed divorce!!!!!

Does anyone know if a marriage is still legal even if a persons legal name was not used when registered???

Joc_42 - What makes you think they divorced? Then again the couple may have divorced and neither one may have remarried.

There is no stopping a woman from getting married after a divorce, using her maiden or her married name. I have an aunt that divorced after 1940 - no records but she remarried and is recorded under both her maiden name and married surname. Her maiden name was indexed wrong so I found the remarriage using the new hubby's details. Is the person you are researching still living? If you know the exact birthdates of the persons involved you might be able to find a death registration on one of the ppv sites, if they have died. Do you have the original marriage or birth certificate so you know what names to look for?

The research guide mentioned in the the second message in this thread explains the situation and what to do.

1938-date: most have been destroyed

therefore

contact the Principal Registry of the Family Division

a persons legal name

Under English law, people can use whatever names they like so long as it's not with intent to defraud.
