I've been browsing the ArchiveCD Books CDs (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D3270&supplier=&breadcrumb=Bookshop%3AOccupations:Archive+CD+Books ) of the Board of Stamps Apprenticeship Books. They are the usual exceptional quality that one expects from ArchiveCD Books and make very interesting reading.

As my research is mostly based on Norfolk, I've run through one of the pieces (IR1/41), extracting all 176 entries relating to the county (just a simple surname and place index), in order to see if it is viable to index all 5 CDs. This has only taken a couple of evenings, so it seems quite practical to carry on.

I mention this in case ayone else has had a similar idea - it would seem a bit pointless to duplicate effort. I'll be carrying on with IR1/42.

Interesting snippets have always fascinated me. In indexing the Apprenticeship records, I've found a surname previously unknown to me. - a chap called MARTINEAU from Norwich was apprenticed to a surgeon from Bury St.Edmunds called MALFALGUYERAT - now there's a name that trips off the tongue! :)

A couple of place names also caught my eye. Marham, in one entry, is called 'Cherry Marham', which I've never seen before.

Whilst another place name amused and caused me to think for a couple for minutes before I realised where it really is - the name? "Poor England". Those of you with Norfolk research should get it!

I'm continuing to index the Norfolk entries from the Board of Stamps Apprenticeship Books. I've now finished IR1/41 and IR1/42; and am well into IR1/43. I've so far only covered 700 pages and have extracted 635 Norfolk entries. If things continue at the same rate, the Country Register index will probably contain about 7,500 enrties from the county. You may think that none of your names will appear, well you might be wrong.....I've taken all the surnames posted on these Norfolk forums since the start of the year and extracted any that match so far; they're listed below:

The above is just a simple example of the names which match those posted on these forums. There are names of interest to just about everyone. I'm happy to carry on indexing the Norfolk entries and to provide this freely as a spreadsheet or WP document to anyone who would find it useful - it's just to help you locate entries more easily. But you'll have to buy the CDs from Rod as I'm not doing lookups and the page numbers in the index refer to the PDF pages on the CDs.

Whilst indexing the Norfolk entries from these CDs, I've come across a couple of apprenticeship records that stand out.

I know about the large number of Dutch immigrants to the county, but the following entries would seem to show a continued connection (presumably through trade) between families in the two conuntries.

Entry 69 - Cornelius DE KEYSOR of Norwich, Haberdasher of small wares - had an apprentice - Cornelius VAN STAVENES of Haarlem, Holland.

Entry 46 - Jn REEVE of Norwich, Merchant - had an apprentice - Jan son of Hen: TIMMERMAN of Amsterdam, Merchant.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who comes across other entries of people from foreign countries being apprentcied here in these records.
