My post appears to have initially been posted in the wrong forum so I try again here.

Hello! As indicated above this is my first post on this forum.

My interest is recording female service & associated organisations casualties from all campaigns. This is not a commercial project it is purely personal and for my own interest but will gladly share what information that I acquire with any other interested party.

My project currently includes 4,000+ unfortunate ladies of which 47 are my known casualties of the 2nd Boer War. The information that I have acquired is from various sources that I hope is correct. The following is a list of those ladies by cemeteries where I understand they are buried. There are some gaps in the information that I hope members can provide, or correct, the details.

I would also be most grateful for the offer of photographs of their graves and, in particular, of the unfortunate lady herself and any other recorded details.

I thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

Tony

An addition to my post above.

Whilst I am unaware of any official or unofficial female involvement in the 1st Boer War, particularly regarding nursing, if there were any female casualties I would be grateful for any information.

Regards.

Hi Tony,
I don't know your sources in compiling the list so far, but have you cross-referred with the casualty lists?
Some things I spot in no special order.................

Nursing Sister Florence BELL, died Kimberley 08/04/1900 I don't see in your list for example.

"HALL, Emily M….PCANSR ..Died..Bloomfontein ………14.05.1900" 13 May according to the lists. No idea which is correct

"CALDCLEUH, Isobel…...PCANSR…11.10.1900" J.Caldclugh in the lists.

Nursing Sister F.HINES, died Bulawayo 7/8/1900 is another I see.
Nursing Sister E.P OWEN ANSR, drowned at Germiston 25/01/1901 is another

"LLOYD, E.B……...PCANSR...Died..Pretoria…………….??.10.1901" died 24/04/1901 in the casualty lists

Are you just interested in nursing casualties or other females?
War correspondents?

"Kingsley, Miss Mary
Correspondent of the Morning Post, died at Simonstown on Whit Sunday, 1900, of fever, and from the results of an operation. She had assisted to nurse the sick of the Boer prisoners of war. By her expressed wish she was buried at sea. The coffin, with her remains, was taken to the Pier at Simonstown on Whit Monday, the procession being headed by the band of the West Yorkshire Regiment. It was then placed on board Torpedo Boat No 29, was taken out to sea, and committed to the deep."

Grateful for your input. Rectified some of my errors and added some of your comments as follows:-

BELL, Florence - My error missed her when listing should have appeared in my Unidentified Cemeteries list.

HALL, Emily - Both dates were listed chose 14th May as is my Birthday – Not 1900 though.

CALDCLEUH, Isobel - My typing error, Should have been CALDCLEUGH as listed in Nat. Arch. Nominal Roll September 1900.

HINES, Frances - Details that I have - Australia. Victoria Army Nursing Service. Died Memorial Hospital Bulawayo, Rhodesia, buried Bulawayo Cemetery; with photos of Hines, her grave and three memorials.

OWEN, E.S. - Have her listed with note of her drowning but our initials differ

LLOYD, Ethel - No idea why I typed that death date in and agree with you

KINGSLEY, Mary - Have quite a bit of info on her, she is well documented on Google with her photo but you details of her funeral are a welcome addition.

Regarding the photos, I did have Jessie Bradbury but not Kate Driver. I am unsure about the top right one – K Boyd (Ladysmith) as I have a Mary Sime Boyd who died at Edinburgh Hospital, Naauwpoort.

I can now tidy up some of my details. Regarding the unidentified cemeteries I suppose one can assume that they were buried where they died but, as assumption is a sin in research, I have left them open for now.

Thanks again for your info.

Neil

A closer study of the 'Anglo Boer War' photos has resulted in two of my casualties being deleted from my casualty list. Keiron Spires list of casualties in
'Ladysmith History & The Boer War' lists Jessie Bradbury and Kate Driver as buried in Intombi Cemetery.

Third pic along, top row 'Nurses at Intombi and Kate Driver' refers to her attending the Ladysmith celebrations. I assume from the 50 year reference that this pic was published some time in the 1950s.

Third pic along, second row 'Ladysmith Anniversary 1930' illustrates a Mrs Jessie Hardy (nee Bradbury)

I have also decided that the Kate Boyd is not my Mary Sime Boyd because she looks too old suggesting that it is a well post-war pic.

Dear TonyM
I would be interested in learning if you have any casualities that came from Bournemouth.

Unfortunately very little info on most of them, the reason that I made my post to see what might be forthcoming.

From the sparse information that I have on a few of them there is no reference to Bournemouth, sorry

An afterthought! What made you ask about a possible Bournemouth nurse? Do you have a name?

May I make one last appeal - I would be most grateful if anybody has knowledge of any Boer War Memorials that have female names commemorated on them.

Tony - Kate Driver and Kate Boyd are the same person. Kate Driver married Dr. J.J. Boyd. Her siege diary is published by the Ladysmith Historical Society. She died in either 1960 or 1961 (I don't have my copy to hand) but I was surprised to read that she's buried at Intombi Cemetery as a) this is a Boer War cemetery and b) she died in the Cape. I suppose she may have been buried at Intombi at her specific request but I've visited Intombi several times and have never seen her headstone.

In the 1960s all the fairly flimsy metal crosses that marked the graves of most of the common soldiers were removed as part of a renovation programme. They were supposed to be returned following the renovation but when the time came they had all 'disappeared'. Consequently the only grave markers now are the headstones of officers and a few colonials plus regimental memorials. A burial circa 1960 would surely have a headstone that survives today.

Here is a link you may find of interest. http://www.angloboerwar.com/Other/nursing.htm

I have to confess to some embarrassment here as I appear to have lost the details from where I obtained the names of the Natal Volunteer Medical Corps people. I have not opened profiles for them as I was unsure of the details. In this particular case, had I have known that she died in the 1960s she would not have appeared in my list as my interest is in casualties only. I will have to edit or re-issue that list and remove the NVMC names.

Regarding the Princess Christians and the Army Nursing Service casualties I commited the mortal sin of assumption in the places of burial, knowing that some were buried in the location of the hospital where they died I assumed the same applied to the others hoping that, like yourself, somebody would correct me if I was wrong.

From what you say about the flimsy metal crosses, would you have any idea how secure the headstones are for the unfortunate nurses who are buried in South Africa? I have grave photos for three of my casualties but so far no further offers of graves or memorials.

thanks for your interest.

Tony - I have visited many Boer War cemeteries in South Africa and headstones are usually in good condition. (The iron crosses look pretty easily removable and in some cases have disappeared). There are exceptions, notably in cases of vandalism which continues to be rife. Marble headstones with, for example, a cross surmounting the plinth are not infrequently broken either by vandalism or simply wear and tear over the decades. In more modern times there doesn't appear to have been any concerted effort to keep the cemeteries, graves and headstones/markers in good repair until the late 1960s.

Well! 1002 views would suggest a healthy interest in the subject at least. However, out of 1002 views only two members came forth with useful details. If my initial casualty list was of any use to anybody at least I have advanced the cause of our female casualties of all wars and campaigns who are sadly well down the popularity list when it comes to military history.

I am still open to offers of photographs of the graves of those listed and memorials on which they are commemorated also the prize would be a photograph of the lady herself.

Seasons greetings to all and a prosperous New Year.

Now that the medal rolls are available on A*******y, have you trawled through them to find further casualties? I ask because I had a quick look at a few pages and found two, Clara Evans (who you already have, although the roll notes that she died from dysentry), and Civilian Nursing Sister C Fishwick who died P'm'burg 8th April 1900. Just a thought.

Thanks for your response. I have never subscribed to A******y , most of my time has obviously been taken up with both world wars but I will take out a short term subscription and see what benefits it has.

I have done a little more rooting around, and found Caroline Fishwick on the 1891 Census working as a Hospital Night Superintendent. In 1891 she was 28, and was born in Rochdale, Lancashire. Doing a general search on Google there is a Memorial Plaque with her name on it in Rochdale, together with another Nurse from the town, Agnes Watson.

Thanks for the info. I found a picture of the Rochdale Memorial with details of both nurses and they are quoted as Nursing Sisters of the Army Nuring Service Reserve.

It also appears that Caroline's father, Lieut. Col. Henry Fishwick was a leading personality in Rochdales Public Services.

Since I posted my revised list there have been over 1000 visits with no comments.
I went through a difficult few months revising my list from all those I could find on the net and other sources and by comparison drew up my revised version;

I spent two periods in hospital and am now housebound with difficulty with my arms and hands particularly trying to type (grateful for the spelling button); so you will appreciate my concern regarding whether my list was useful or not.

My interest in nursing casualties in purely personal and not commercial

Grateful for any comments

Tony
