Sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place, I tried looking for a Transcriptions thread which I've read, but can't find it!

I've just added this message to the Devon County Forum, as I asked for help from someone with local knowledge of the area last month.

This proves the necessity (if it's at all possible of course) to view the actual Census images, rather than rely totally on transcriptions. :D

Here's a bit of the Census Transcript for 1851 which I had, with no County for Lay:

Mary 8 Scholar Lay

My friend Sue looked this page up for me at the FRC yesterday, she had difficulty reading the name of Lay, so she did what I would have done and at least made an attempt! I knew immediately that it's Clayhidon seeing as I'm getting used to the places in Devon now, but wouldn't guess it from Lay!

Mary, Daug, 8, Scholar, born (??)Claighinton(??)
