i need help in finding out where my ggggrandad was born. He died in 1841 in The Kings Arms Great College Street Westminster about 6 weeks before the census was taken. So have no Idea whether he was actually born in Westminster. Any solutions to my dilemma

Hi dental8,

Could you give us his name, please?

Josie

In answer to your reply Josie, His name was John Barlow. His wife was Mary Ann who I have found on the 1841 census and living in the pub.

Hi dental,
The 1841 census would not have told you were he was born anyway apart from if he was still living in county of birth and that is often inaccurate.
I suggest you get his death certificate as this will give his age at death and will help narrow down your research. See if he left a Will, sometimes clues can be found here if property is left or relatives are mentioned in a certain place. Unfortunately it is difficult to locate a birthplace for someone with a fairly common surname if they died before the 1851 census.

Do you have the census reference for Mary Ann?

Are there any other clues, when was she born, was she born in the county, are there children, do you have their marriage?

Thank Geoffers, I must have been looking with my eyes shut ;)

It is possible that Emma was baptised at St. James, Pentonville in Dec 1825. Said to be born 6 Oct 1825. Parents John Barlow, a Victualler and Mary Ann. They were living at North Street.

There is a case at The Old Bailey Online (number 557) of a John Heath stealing 3 sovereigns from his master John Barlow who kept the Prince of Wales at Pentonville in 1826. The Prince of Wales was in North Street.

Sorry, does not help find his birth.

To save me a lot of typing, have a read of this guide on death duties (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=107)
