My Dad served in 1939-45 and was entitled to the medals consistent with serving during that period. I was interested in obtaining these when availble through a UK offer, but my Dad never bothered - I guess it brought back too many unpleasant memories.
Anyway, a few years ago, he and I were at a "Medal Show", he pointed out the medals he was entitled to and I bought them, a nice display case and they now have 'pride of place' in our home.
Today, I found another rellie was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal during the Boer War. I googled it and discovered quite a bit about that Medal. I've decided to get myself one to commemorate my rellie's involvement.
Other rellies served in the Boer War, 1914-18 and 1939-45. Finding out who served, where served and in the appropriate service is becoming daunting, but due to their involvement, I want to commemorate their efforts. Any ideas on how I can start such a search?
Thanks for ideas and suggestions

Start of with TNA
Google for a forum to read about other people experiences with buying medals.
Keep an eye open on the bay that sells stuff.
I have my uncles WWII medals (including box in which they were posted to him) and what I believe was his demob fob watch. I will never part with them.

This is a site which will provide lots about WW1, and there is a link there to the Great War Forum if you need more help than you get here.
1914-1918.net/ (put www. in front)

Have a good read up on medal collecting before you buy (especially on the place referred to before). There are lots of fakes and copies on the market being sold as originals. You can end up paying lots of money for worthless junk.
You can search for your relatives army records at the National Archives.

The Queens South Africa medal itself is only part of the story. I would start by researching your relative to establish what battle or state clasps he might be entitled to.
Can I also suggest that you post a request for information on a site such as the 'Victorian Wars Forum', where one of the members may have access to the medal roll - of course for this you will need to provide details of the regiment or corps he served in. If you want to obtain a representative example, at least it will then have the correct clasps.

Hi Martin.
One of my chaps is Joseph Edward Wyckaert - born 1873. Have started a thread on him so you may want to look at it and then come back to this one or respond on the other.
Thanks

Having read your other post I assume this medal is for HMS Powerful. This ship supplied a number of men for the Naval Brigade ashore, and as such are highly collectable and have a price tag to match! However, I see your man received a no-clasp medal, this makes an example much more affordable.
Incidently you can download his full service history from the NA website for a small fee of £3.50.

See Martin's mesage above, also.....
Have a look at the Angloboerwar.com site for the participation of the Naval Brigade in the South African War (It has the QSA medal roll for HMS Powerful and mentions Stoker Wyckaert). There are a couple of books published which make interesting reading and should be availale via the Naval and Military Press:Naval Brigades in the South African War 1899-1900 - by Surg. T. T. JEANSWith the Naval Brigade in Natal 1899-1900 - by Lieutenant BURNE RNThe depsatches from the Naval Brigade which appear in the Lonon Gazette make intersting mementos.

Thanks Geoffers.
I'm learning a lot as I go. Have spent most of the morning on the site you mentioned - made very interesting reading. Certainly has a lot of info.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - another of your very helpful posts.
