Stack Rock Fort was completed c 1850 to protect against the (imagined) invasion of Napoleon .

At this time would the men have been called to duty or would they have just joined up and been posted there?

They appear to be soldiers enlisted in the RA - possibly a detachment from South Hook Fort (this appears as schedule 50 on the pages preceeding Stack Rock Fort - schedule 51).

South Hook Fort was commanded by a Major RA with a Lieutenant 2 i/c. I would assume that sections led by a Sergeant would be posted to Stack Rock for set periods.

Photos of both forts can be found on palmerstonforts.org.uk/gall/gal12.htm

Thanks for that Geoffers the palmerstonforts link you provided has a great picture of the fort, much better than the one I found.

Thanks again.
