My grandfather THOMAS RICHARDSON was born to MARGARET RICHARDSON
9th June 1877 at STRING OF HORSES LANE BRAMPTON. I have his birth cert. No father, mother signed with a cross.
He had 2 sisters and they lived with their grandfather and grandmother and mother at BRAMPTON CUMBERLAND.

I sent for the birth certificate of one of the daughters EMILY ETHEL born
21 feb 1879 hoping to find the name of the father but no luck Mother MARGARET signed with a cross . No father but this time born WORKHOUSE BRAMPTON.
Does this mean she went in there to have her baby because she was poor and then went back to her fathers. Or does it mean that she was living there perhaps with her parents because they were poor?
They are altogether on the 1881 census , the 3 children their mother and their grandparents., but on the 1891 census MARGARET is not there. Just the children living with the grandparents so I don't know if MARGARET died or just went somewhere else.
Can anyone come up with a death of MARGARET please.?

Marina

I have put this on a new thread as the other one is such a long one thank you

Hello Marina,

According to the Workhouse website (workhouses.org.uk), the following records are kept at the Cumbria Records Office (http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/carec.asp) in Carlisle:

Guardians' minutes (1837-1930)
Accounts (1837-1939)
Relief order books (1848-94)
Vaccination lists (1871-1928)

You never know, there may be some clues there. :)
