Would appreciate help in tracing any newspaper articles that might exist which refer to awarding or presentation to my grandfather of a Royal Humane Society award in 1899.

On 17 July 1899 The Royal Humane Society awarded an Honorary Testimonial on vellum to my grandfather, Samuel BLACK, “having gone to the rescue of John Curran (16) miner who was in imminent danger of drowning in the River Tyne at Newburn and whose life he gallantly saved”. According to the entry in the Royal Humane Society’s case book, the incident took place at 6.30 pm on 08 June 1899, Tyne at Newburn: The man was bathing and got into deep water 40 yards from the bank and 14 feet deep ebb tide. Samuel swum out fully clothed and succeeded in bringing him to the bank.

At the time of the rescue, Samuel was serving in the Northumberland Fusiliers Army Reserve. In 09 October 1899 he was recalled to Army Service and was sent to South Africa on 04 November 1899

Alderman Stephens of Newcastle sent details of the case to the Royal Humane Society and the award on vellum was sent by post to Alderman W.S. Stephens, Newcastle on 03 August 1899. Alderman Stephens would have received the Award some time after 03 August 1899 (depending on how long mail took to travel between London and Newcastle). If the award was presented to Samuel in person, it must have been presented sometime between 04 August 1899 (say) and 04 November 1899 when Samuel sailed to South Africa.

In the 1891 census Samuel’s parents were living in Lemmington. Any ideas?
