Hi everyone, tommorrow (or some time this week or next, it depends) I'm off to visit the probate office, which is near where I work. I'm after a will from 1973.

Am I allowed to ask for copies of wills from 1973? It doesn't seem that long ago to me!

If I find it on their microfiche can I order it there or do I have to take the details and apply by post? Does anyone know how much it costs if I can order it there and then ?

I bet you can tell I haven't done this before ! |help|

Yes. But not all District Probate Registries have the full Calendar on fiche, so it might be wise to ring first to check yours does cover this period.

Yes, but the delivery arrangements vary at different registries. They may or may not have a "while you wait" service, and/or they may offer postal delivery (e.g. 7 working days)

It costs £5.00, whether you get it there and then, or by post.

Some more details are here (http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm#details).

Once you have access to the Calendar, post-1858 probate is one of the easiest of searches, so enjoy :)
