Hi Magic

I don't know why, or where I got this from but I think it could have been a black smith who worked for the mine's.

but then again, if I am wrong I stand corrected.

Could it be misread and perhaps be coach smith? Just a thought!

Hi Magic,
I have never come across this term before, is it possible to forward a reference?

A Smith is someone who works with metal eg Blacksmith, Goldsmith & Coppersmith. How one can be a coal smith is difficult to understand although I see the words are seperated which could imply he worked as a Smith at a coal mine maybe repairing metal equipment.

There is a birth reference for an Ernest John Godbeer born on Bridgwater R.D. in Oct/Nov/Dec of 1886, Vol 5c, page 3_1 (the second number is too faint to read for sure).

This will be him in 1901, living in Bridgewater, Somerset:

Robert Godbeer - Head - M - 51 - Coal Smith - Exeter, Devon
Emma Godbeer - Wife - M - 47 - Bridgewater, Somerset
Ada Godbeer - Dau - S - 21 - Collar Machinist (Shirt) - Bridgewater, Somerset
Carry Godbeer - Dau - S - 18 - Collar Machinist (Shirt) - Bridgewater, Somerset
Ernest Godbeer - Son - S - 14 - Draper's Porter - Bridgewater, Somerset

Census reference: Class: RG13; Piece: 2284; Folio: 138; Page: 8. (Images copyright TNA)
This was given to me on a tread from sommerset section .
When i was tracing somebody ....thanks

Looks like Coach Smith to me, as already suggested above by gasser. ;)

Hi magic,
I would totally agree with gasser & Kerrywood. This definitely says COACH SMITH.

He was a Carriage Smith in 1891, Coach Smith in 1871 and 1881.
