Can someone tell me where I can find out more about John Emanuel on the 1851 -61-71-and 81 census he says that he was a pilot he lived in Baglan. Glam. I would like to find out what he was pilot of in these years.
I also want to know the same for William Williams Pilot 1851 and 1861 he lived in Briton Ferry. Glam.
If anyone can help I would be very pleased as I now live in Western Australia
so it makes it difficult for me to search

He would have piloted ships to and from their berths. Even today you still have River Pilots, because of safety issues and they know the rivers better than the ship's Captains.
