Hello

I am looking for my great uncle, John Richards DOB 1898.

Recently I was going through my parents belongings and found a medal with the name John Richards and his serial number 109615.

I looked him up on CWG and found that he had died 4 September 1917 at Chattham Barracks. He was a Stoker 1c.

I don't know what the other initials stand for.

Could anyone help me understand what it all means.

Stoker 1c, SS 109615 (Ch), DOW

I could then go onto a***** and search him out.

I am also having trouble locating my great grand fathers service record, he was Robert Robinson, DOB 1891. Lived in Liverpool, his regiment was Royal Field Artillery, he died 30 September 1917. He rank was driver, his unit was 59 Div Ammunition Col. His service number 695690.

I have found him on WW1 medal roll, CWG, 1911 census, but love to see his service record.

Thanks for the pointer, there was a James and a John in the family and i have attached it to the wrong person, should have been James.

Can i ask which site you used to find the information, i have tried a****** and still cant find him, unless i am doing something very wrong.

On the medal after SS109615, J Richards and STO there are the initials IRN. Any idea what they stand for?

You won't find him on Ancestry - he was Royal Navy - the reference above is for his 1 page service record that is available to be downloaded from the National Archives for GBP3.50

The STO 1 - confirms he was a first class stoker - and RN says he was Royal Navy

The website http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1917-09Sep.htm lists him as a casualty amongst many others of a Gotha bombing raid on Chatham Barracks on the night of 3/4 September

For Robert Robinson - the surviving Army service records that are on Ancestry are only a very small percentage of the originals - many were destroyed in a fire during the blitz in 1940 - so there is no guarantee of finding one for a man who served

Cheers

Sorry - forgot to mention - the SS before his number I think suggests he joined the RN probably prewar as a short service stoker - which meant 5 years regular service in the RN then 7 years in the Royal Fleet Reserve

His service record should confirm this

Stokers who went into the RN during the war for the period of hostilities only had the prefix K before their number

Cheers
Sue

Thank you both for your help.

I did eventually find him, thank you again.

It always amazes me how people are so willing to help others out on here.

CWGC has his name as James and his age at death as 24 (bn c.1893). If you are sure that you have the correct person, then his service recordx can be downloaded from TNA for £3.50 - James RICHARDS ADM188/1115 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7294892&queryType=1&resultcount=1)

There appears to be a possible match in the GRO birth index to confirm that the date of birh on the service record may be correct.
