I was told that this is my ggg grandfather, Frederick James Hillier; who was a high ranking NCO. This photo was apparently taken during the Anglo Boer War...i was wondering if anyone can confirm that with refference to the ubniform or give any details

Was Frederick James Hillier the son of John Hillier, born 1876?

If so, then his army pension documents are on Ancestry (four pages of original images)

He was in the Northumberland Fusiliers and enlisted on 17 January 1894 aged 18. He served in South Africa from 1899 to 1902.

Next of kin listed as John Hillier, 9 Cavendish St. Hoxton, London.

Let me know if this is likely to be him and you need more details.

OK, his birth was registered December quarter 1857 in Bath
Volume 5c page 638

The birth certificate can be ordered on line here (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/) and will tell you the full names of his parents.

Having said that, this looks like a possible match on the 1861 census.

Hi there sue, i know this is a really really late reply. I just stumbled upon my post from ages ago and realised that the information in your last post was all 100% correct and has just given me a new area to explore...

Thanks so so much
