Ideas please.

Charles was my great grandfather born c1857 Northiam, Kent.
1881 Census shows him as a police constable in High Halden, Kent.

Cant find him at all on 1891 census but his wife and many children are in the Hollingbourne Union Workhouse.

1901 sees the family back together but living in Bromley and Charles job is Ironmongery.

Is it possible to find out why and when he left the Kent police? Was it something drastic enough to result in the workhouse for his family?

I dont know where to look for more info and as I'm in Scotland, local research is not practical.

Kent Archive Service have a research service or an independent researcher would be cheaper.
