I have done fairly well researching my family although I have come across a stumbling block. my grandad born 1876 in Shropshire was in the Boar War or so I am told but I have no idea how to find anything about him. I am told unless I have a number or a regiment name I will not find anything. Is this right?

It is certainly easier with a number and regiment, but not impossible without, but it might mean a lot of ellimination work.

Have you tried Kevin Asplins site?

If your chap was in the British Army during the Boer War, his service record may be held at The National Archives (TNA) at Kew. They have loads of research guides, click on those prefixed 'British Army.' (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?WT.lp=gs-researchguides#b)

Army records are in the process of being scanned digitally to make them available online by 2011. (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/212.htm)

If he was with the Naval Brigade, his service record will be available via documentsonline.

Also try using a search engine for 'angloboerwar' - a web-site will turn up which has quite a few medal lists and other basic records.
