Hi,
I'm new to this site & hoping someone can give me some advise!
I have a copy of a will dated 1849 in Woolwich Kent, in which an ancestor Henry Sinclair leaves all his interest in the copyhold estate in the parish of Shipton, Yorks' to his son & daughter.
What is a copyhold estate & would it be possible to trace it? As he spent most of his life in the army as a private
& marrying quite late in life in the south, I do wonder how he came to have this interest in Yorkshire. Could it have been passed to him by his wife upon marriage in those days. We've no idea where she came from.
Shirl.

The first place to look for the whereabouts of manorial documents is the Manorial Document Register -

Hi Shirl.

This link (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24342) should help you.
It might also be worth searching North Yorkshire Online Archives (http://archives.northyorks.gov.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Search.tcl), for records of this estate.

Thanks Finbar,
I will check it out
