I've discovered (thanks to a birth and death certificate) that my GGGgrandfather was a railway platelayer. I know where he lived (Audenshaw, Manchester) so would that make it possible to work out which company he worked for?
Also, would any records still exist?

Hi Parkesy
My husband (who knows about these things!) said probably the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway or the London and North Western Railway. Also possibly the Great Central.
He has a book called "Was Your Grandfather a Railwayman?" by Tom Richards published by Federation of Family History Societies. I can give you further details if you're interested.
Best wishes
Christine

Hi Shertur
I'd appreciate all tips on find out out where he worked. There is something drawing me to find out as much as I can about him and I don't know why.

Have you tried googling? For example -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audenshaw_railway_station
After identifying the company, use the National Register of Archives to locate records.
