Thanks to information from this board I have managed to locate the Whadcocks in the 1871,1881 1891 and 1901 census. I have one curious mention though. In 1881, 4 years before he died, Joseph Whadcock was on the census form for Leicester Lunatic asylum. He is down as a servant, but there are no patients mentioned. Just a few officers and servants. Would imates have been left off the census or where they put down as servants?

The inmates would always have been recorded too. In the censuses, the fist entries for such institutions are the staff, and then followed by the inmates. Some officers of such establishments filled in the Census Schedule with full and complete details, others filled them in with just the initials of the inmates.

This is an example where the names are recorded (an asylum)

An this is an example where people are going to have huge problems tracing their ancestors. Note the WIDE range of places of birth of the people recorded here (an orphanage in Bristol). All over the country!

There are 18 pages of returns on film RG 11 3124.The first two pages are all officials and servants of the institution. The patients appear from the second enrty on page three...sadly this will not be of much use to anyone looking for rellies. There are no names only initials.
