Jane Truse?

Have a look at the census closest to the date of the certificate and see if you can find her there.

I have a village in Essex where a woman took responsibility for registering the deaths of those who died there. She seemed to be the one who knew what to do and also laid out the body in preparation for burial.

Could this be a similar scenario?

I had a similar occurance with my g.g.grandad who died 1851 (fortunately post census). The name on his death cert was not family, and by doing what Jan9154 suggested I found she ws a local shopkeeper! As to why she was with him at death, I really will never know.

As he seems to have died of "consumption" (i.e TB), perhaps it was a nurse or convalescent home proprietress? Jans suggestion regarding the census is a good one - you may discover the lady in question had an occupation which would fit with her being there at the time...
Did he die at home?

jobarbra,

What is the name of the deceased?

There is a Jane TREECE (Independent) in the 1841 census in Holbeach Bank.

Living next door to an Ann BALDOCK - a name which seems to be of interest to you.

Jane Treece of Holbeach Bank is shown in the 1881 census as "formerly nurse"

Well.....that sems to solve that one. The certificate is for William Baldock who's wife was Ann.

So Jane Treece is the nurse living next door hey? Who'd have thought! Thanks everyone
