Robert Currie abt 1816

Janet nimmo abt 1803 1861

Janet Currie nee Nimmo 58, widow of Robert Currie of 12 Fountainbridge Edinburgh died 14 August 1861.
Parents John Nimmo (shepherd) and Barbara unknown. Both deceased.
Son Robert Currie of 9 Dunbar Street, registered the death

i had a look on Scotlandspeople for a marriage from 1825 to 1841 for Janet Nimmo None to Robert Currie though.

Hi Tomo,

There is a large age difference between Robert & Janet Currie. It is quite likely that Janet Nimmo had been married before and married Robert Currie as a widow in which case she would not be Nimmo.

There is a marriage that could be a possibility:-

Robert Currie & Janet Littlejohn 7th Dec 1835 St Cuthberts Edinburgh.

(Robert would have not been old enough to have married much before this date)

Hello Jeremy,

Robert CURRIE & Janet LITTLEJOHN might be able to be ruled out?

The IGI lists three sons to them, all born Borthwick Midlothian:
Gedion (sic) b 1838
Robert b 1847
John b 1852

Gideon can be found in the 1851 census aged 12, with brothers Peter 9 and Robert 3. His parents are listed as Robert 38 and Janet 36 (i.e. dob ca 1815). The age of this Janet does not match that of the Janet (nee NIMMO) CURRIE who died at age 58 in 1861 (i.e. dob ca 1803).

Hello tomo245uk,

It may be that, for one of a number of reasons, there is no marriage record to be found.

One of the major reasons is that Statutory Registration did not begin in Scotland until 1855 so all you could hope to find is a record in a church register.

It is important to remember that, prior to 1855, ScotlandsPeople holds only records of the OPRs (Old Parish Records) of the 'established' (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland. However there were many breakaway Presbyterian churches and there were also churches of other denominations. Also the laws of Scotland did not require there to be church involvement for a marriage to be legal.

Do you have any further information about the family? Have you found them in the 1841, 1851 or 1861 censuses? What was Robert snr's occupation and when did he die? Did they have children other than Robert jnr?

Best of luck,

JAP

Hello again tomo245uk,

As I explained earlier, it may well be that there is no marriage record to be found.

You say you have Janet's birth. I'm unable to locate it.

I've found her in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses.
1841 - spelled Jannet; she is with Robert, and Robert 10, John 5, Elizabeth 4 and William 2, also a Cathren GOODSIR 10. All except Jannet were born in Midlothian; Janet born elsewhere in Scotland.

1851 - Janet 47, b Bothwell Lanarkshire is with her children Robert 21, John 17, Elizabeth 13 and William 11, all born in Midlothian; plus a lodger.

1861 - Janet's birthplace is given as Hamilton Lanarkshire; William 20 is the only child still at home; there are two lodgers.

In 1861, son Robert, a Railway Porter, is at 9 Dunbar St. He is married to Janet CARNEGIE and they have a 3yo son Robert (the marriage and the birth of little Robert are in the IGI).

JAP
