Does anyone know if it is possible to research London Magistrate's court
records pertaining to 'maintenance orders' ?

I think you first need to be familiar with the advice in the book My Ancestor was a Bastard (obtainable through Parish Chest).

In view of your geographical position it would then be as well to contact the LMA Enquiry Point telling them what you know and what you want to find out. They should be able to tell you what's possible.

When you contact them you'll need to tell them the mother's address in addition to the relevant dates so that they can decide which the appropriate court is.

Sometimes newspapers can be better sources but that raises other issues.
