What are his naming details on the medals? The mounted infantry were composite units made up from men from different parent units. Medals were not named to the MI and no service records or medal rolls were raised in the name of the MI. In other words we need to know his original parent unit.

From the details you've given it looks like he was in one of the branches of the artillery (horse, field or garrison). There were many batteries but most QSA medals include the battery in the naming details. What are the clasps on the QSA medal?

I am interested in when my Grand Father signed up and the time he spent in the South Africa War. Also the town where he lived when he signed up.

Your best plan is probably to get hold of his discharge papers. This research guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14) explains it.

The documents are not on line.

I cannot find a birth record for him in either the September or December Quarters. Could he have lied about his date of birth?
