Robert Nelson married Martha

Census information confirms that Robert was born in Whissonsett, Norfolk in
1825 and Martha was born in Weasenham, Norfolk in 1829.

But what was Martha’s maiden name?

The clue comes from the 1881 census.
Robert and Martha are living at Main Street, Marske, Yorkshire:

1881: Main Street, Marske, Yorkshire
Robert Nelson abt 1825, 56, Whissonsett, Norfolk, Head, Labourer
Martha Nelson abt 1829, 52, Whissonsett, Norfolk, Wife
William Nelson abt 1860, 21, Skelton, Yorkshire, Son, Stone Mason
Edward Nelson abt 1865, 16, Marske, Yorkshire, Son, Coal Leader (Carter)
Jessie Eldon abt 1866, 15, London, Middlesex, Niece, Servant

I note that Martha’s place of birth is given as Whissonsett in the 1881 census,
but as Weasenham in 1861, 1871 and 1891 so I take the latter to be correct.

But who is Jessie Eldon, niece, servant to this family?

Possibility 1. She is the daughter of Robert Nelson’s sister
Possibility 2. She is the daughter of Martha Nelson’s sister
Possibility 3. She is the daughter of Martha Nelson’s brother

Now, for the moment I don’t have any information about siblings for Robert or
Martha.

Jessie Eldon was living away from home and in service at 15, but was
presumably with her family as a five year old in the 1871 census.

Here she is:

1871: 9 Phillip Street, Shoreditch, London
George Eldon 34 Bermondsey, Middlesex, Head, Carpenter
Susanna Eldon 36 Weasenham, Norfolk, Wife
Cristopher W Eldon 11 Darlington, Durham, Son, Scholar
Jessie Eldon 5 Hoxton, Middlesex, Daughter, Scholar
Emily Eldon 3 Hoxton, Middlesex, Daughter, Scholar
Susan E Eldon 1 Hoxton, Middlesex, Daughter

So now the focus is on Susanna Eldon. What was her maiden name?
Was it Nelson? – in which case she was Robert’s sister (Possibility 1 above)
Or if not then EITHER Susanna is Martha’s sister (Possibility 2)
OR George Eldon is Martha’s brother (Possibility 3).

Can I find the marriage details for George Eldon and Susanna?

We are looking for a marriage about 1860 (Cristopher’s birth) or before.

I searched LDS for a marriage of George Eldon in the decade 1850 to 1860:
Two results:
1852, Northumberland, George Eldon to Jane Barron
1859, Middlesborough, George Eldon to Susanna TAYLOR.

The spelling of Susanna seems affirmative, and a Middlesborough marriage
makes sense in the light of the birth of Cristopher in Darlington.

So – progress. Jessie Eldon’s mother was born Susannah Taylor.

So we eliminate Possibility 1 – Susanna was not Robert Nelson’s sister.
But is she Martha’s sister, or could George Eldon be Martha’s brother?

Ah! But we now use the fact that Susanna was born in Weasenham (1871
Census). So it’s pretty obvious that she must be Martha’s sister!

Moreover, the LDS information takes us a little further:
GEORGE ELDON marriage to SUSANNA TAYLOR
GEORGE ELDON: father: WILLIAM ELDON
SUSANNA TAYLOR: father ROBERT THOMAS TAYLOR
Marriage: 23 JUN 1859 Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.

So we have established that Martha Nelson was sister to Susannah Taylor
and the daughter of Robert Thomas Taylor.

What I find quite fascinating is that the two sisters Martha and Susanna both
find themselves in North Yorkshire at about the same time. What was it that
took these two Norfolk girls to Yorkshire?

Martha’s daughter Susan (named after Susanna?) was born in Whissonsett
about 1858, and her son William was baptised 6th Jan 1860 at Skelton near

Marske, Yorkshire. So it looks as though Robert and Martha moved to
Yorkshire during 1858 or 1859.

And it was on 23 June 1859 that Susanna marries George in the same
vicinity. Now George was a Londoner and had returned South before about
1865 when Jessie Eldon was born in Hoxton. I wonder what he was doing in
Yorkshire.

I can imagine the following scenario:

Robert Nelson marries his Weasenham sweetheart Martha and they set up
home in Whissonsett. Something takes the family to Yorkshire about 1858/9.
During that period the unmarried Susanna Taylor visits Yorkshire to see her
sister (and nieces Mary Jane and Susan, and nephew Robert). While there
she meets a London man George Eldon who invites her to be his wife…….
and Mary Jane (nearly 5) makes a lovely bridesmaid………

Now I really am flying kites! But behind this lies a question that might be worth
exploring:
Were there other family connections that drew the two Norfolk sisters to
Yorkshire – Eldons, Taylors or Nelsons? Or did one sister follow the other
there?

And what can I discover about Robert Thomas Taylor who had two daughters
Martha 1829 and Susanna 1835 in Weasenham.

Can’t wait for my Norfolk 1841 CD to arrive!

Hi David,

Believe it or not, I'd previously typed into the 1851 'search' for Martha, born Weasenham, and found
Martha Taylor, servant, u, 22, born Weasenham, living in High Street, Mitford Whissonsett, but decided that it all fitted a bit too conveniently to be true, so didn't say anything. (HO107/1825, f620 p18)
In view of this I think that Robert can't be too far away - unless he was already oop north sussing out work opportunities though in which case why wait so long after he was married before going north again? It might be worth ordering the actual 1851 census for Whissonsett at your LDS FHC and making sure that Robert wasn't missed off the transcription. I've looked for alternatives and the nearest is a Robert Melton living in Horningtoft but the age doesn't fit.
Can't find a Susan/Susanna/Susannah Taylor born Weasenham in the 1851 - had hoped that she might still be living at home with mum and dad.

I'd guess at work, which was the cause of much migration. In the 1830's posters advertised the wages available to those 'industrious and unemployed poor'. One posted in Blofield Union even specified 'the more girls the better' and 'None but persons of steady industrious habits need apply.' As well as the poor, skilled workmen travelled north where their abilities were of use in industry. There had always been a lot of trade along the east coast, and it is not unusual to find families who moved between East Anglia, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. One of the means of tavelling there would be to use the carriers running from Norwich to Lynn; then Lynn to Grantham where a coach would be picked up going north.

Interestingly, the 1851 census shows a Thomas Taylor, perhaps if your Robert Thomas tended to just use his second name, this may be him? If not, he may be related.....

Good fun puzzling all this out, isn't it? :)

Yes, it certainly is Geoffers.
Thanks, once again, to you and Pam.
Think I'll sit on this one for a while until my Norfolk 1841 arrives - and then decide whether I need 1851 too.

Thanks again.
