Newspapers are the best bet. An attempted murder charge would be big news at the time and the local papers would have picked it up.

With the very little detail you have given I can only suggest you try Cumbria Local studies, and see which newspapers they hold for the area you are interested in.

It may possibly be recorded at The National Archives and more serious offences are indexed.

I tried a search of 'Attempted murder' in the period 1895-1905 and came up with 22 hits - click here for a list of results (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=attempted+murder&txtfirstdate=1895&txtlastdate=1905&txtrestriction=&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=25&image1.y=4)

Of course the offence may be different, it may not have gone to trial, or may not be included in TNA's catalogue.

Also remember that he may not have been in a prison anywhere near where he lived at the time of the offence.

Have you looked at Old Bailey Online. 1674 - 1913 (http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/), in some circumstances it did try cases from all over the UK.

Cumbria Criminal Justice Board (http://lcjb.cjsonline.gov.uk/Cumbria/942.html) has some useful links.
