Dear Bo-peep,
This Johnny-come-lately has a problem which you may be able to solve.
According to family stories my grandfather JOHN STEPHENS, born 17 April 1860/1859, was enlisted as a sailor in the Merchant Navy when very young. During a sea voyage he and a few others absconded. Some say in Cape Twon others in Lourenco Marques (Now Maputo). They say he was JOHN DUNN but then accepted his mother's surname STEPHENS as his. He became a Stone Mason in the Free State.
Is this just a story?
He never spoke to any family members about his parents in Cornwall. I can only deduct from the way he named his children that his father may have been JOHN HENRY STEPHENS (OR DUNN) and his mother THIRZA JANE STEPHENS. His third son named SAMUEL STEPHENS. Maybe after his brother?
They say he was born in PENZANCE.
From here in South Africa I found so many JOHN STEPHENS'S in Cornwall that I got lost.
Could you or someone else, give me directions in the right direction please.
John
