James was married 1725 he is on marriage entry as waterman (watn) have confirmed today with archivist at tyne and wear archives. I found his father as a Captain marriner does anybody know where I can find records on the internet of watermen and merchant navy, the latter being late 1600s please. Trinity house records dont go back that far. thanks|jedi||jedi|

I think you'll be lucky to find records of merchant seamen on the internet, or even at TNA (Muster rolls were not kept until 1747). Have a browse of their research guides, prefixed 'Merchant Seamen' (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?WT.lp=gs-researchguides#m)
Other thoughts - Possibly try a search of the London Gazette. Did the mariner leave a will?
