I can't find Alfred on 1871 census but there is this on the 1881
RG11/5253/55/15
GARNDIFFAITH Trevethin Monmouthshire
Sarah Ann Gould married 34 born Trevethin
Joseph Parfit (0nly one t) son 14 shoemakers apprentice born trevethin
Alfred Parfit son 13 born trevethin
Reuben Gould 3 son Trevethin
Abraham Gould 1 son trevethin

So did Sarah Ann ?, marry Joseph Parfit(t), he died and she remarried, ? Gould, who isn't on this census with her.
I'll look some more.

A marriage possibility? On same page FreeBMD
Joseph Parfit (one t) and Sarah Ann Williams Dec 1/4 1862 Registration District Pontypool, vol 11a page 174.

Ok so you had this and already know Sarah's maiden name.
So did Joseph die or did they just go their own ways? I haven't found a relevant death for Joseph yet.

On the marriage certificate for Joseph and Sarah Ann what is George's occupation. Also Joseph's age and occupation?

As I have been searching for the Parfit(t)s I have noticed a link between Somersetshire and Wales and suspect your George or Joseph originated there. Then I found this and wonder if it is your Alfred.

Have you seen the Parfitt records on here? Might help:

http:/freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/trevethinprt.htm

I hope this works - I can't paste a link so have typed it out. Trevethin parish records on Mike John's invaluable monfamilies website.

1851 Ho 107/1939/248/32
Northend Clutton Somersetshire
George Parfitt 42 no occupation given
Maria wife 46
William 17 no occ
Joshua 15
John 13
Joseph 6
Alfred 3
Elizabeth 1 month
All born Clutton

George Parfett 52 Baker born Clutton DEAF
Maria 51
Joseph 16 coal miner
Alfred 13 coal miner
Elizabeth 10 scholar
All born Clutton.

This is the only Joseph Parfitt showing with a father George and a baker is close to a green grocer. So the Parfitt family did originate in Somerset. It also seems that Joseph added a couple of years to his age at his marriage in 1862, which isn't unusual.

I use Findmypast (FMP) and ancestry.com There are others such as The Genealogist and genesreunited. They are all pay per view sites.
Both ancestry and FMP have free two week trial periods. Maybe use one for 2 weeks then the other. Just remember to cancel before the fortnight is up or you will find yourself with a subscription you didn't want. Also I don't think the 1911 census is part of the two week free trial on FMP
Alternatively you can pay as you search but can work out rather expensive if, like your Parfitts, there are a lot of them and living in the same area.
For the births, deaths and marriages I use FreeBMD which also is on ancestry but not quite as up to date. What ancestry does have is the official GRO records for BDMs up to 2005. FMP does too and they are making the search for them more user friendly and not such a roundabout process. Otherwise take a look around their sites and see ALL the records both have to offer.
