Hello

The 1861 London census tells me that David CADWELL, farrier, was born in Caxton in about 1828 or 1829. He probably married Emily MIDDLETON of Buckden in about 1848/9 and the first 2 children were born in Caxton so he's likely to appear there in 1841 and 1851 censuses. He was living in London in 1853 when my g grandmother Eliza Cadwell was born.

With the 1861 census for London now searchable online I've been able to make this step backwards with my gg grandfather. My discovery is so recent I've not yet had the opportunity to check BMDs (except FreeBMD, and his marriage doesn't appear there) or the 1841/1851 census.

Does anyone have any knowledge or interest? Can anyone look up the 1841 or 1851 census?

Thanks for any help

Colin

Many thanks

I now know that John CADWELL first married Mary Cooper, then, following her death, Elizabeth FLANDERS; both marriages took place in Eaton Socon. John was described as a sojourner at the time of his first marriage, so he was not from Gt Paxton. Unfortunately he died in 1847 so I've no census information to give me his place of birth |banghead|

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Colin

Colin,

John, wife Elizabeth, Sarah, James and Mary CADWELL were not born in the county according to the 1841 census. Looking on the 1851 census for James & Mary CADWELL, I have found what could be them in Middlesex St Marylebone:

HO107/1491, folio 650, page 1
1 Bentinck Court

James CADWELL Head Mar 57 Blacksmith Bedford Biggleswade
Mary do Wife Mar 57 Middlesex Southgate
John do Son Mar 22 Blacksmith do do
Sarah do Daur Mar 19 Huntingdon Paxton

Given that your John and James above are both Blacksmiths and the surname is not that common, one would think they might well be related and there is on the IGI an extracted baptism of a James CADWELL on 18 January 1795 (born 14 December 1794) at Biggleswade, father Thomas, mother Sarah. There is also an IGI baptism at Biggleswade on 27 September 1801 (born 14 May 1801) of a John CADWELL, father James mother Sarah.

There is an 1851 census record in the District Workhouse, Biggleswade (HO107/1753, folio 628, page 4) of a Sarah CADWELL, widow, 84, Pauper, born St Neots Hunts. She is also in the Biggleswade Union Workhouse in the 1841 census (HO107/2/9, folio ?, page 2).

Looking again on the IGI there is an extracted record of the marriage in Eaton Socon (maybe another link with your John?) on 23 June 1793 of a Thomas CADWELL and a Sarah BELL.

I would think your first step would be to consult the parish registers of both Biggleswade and Eaton Socon for the baptism of your John. They have certainly been put onto fiche, but I am not sure whether they are on cd or not.

Hope this helps.

Janet

Hello Janet

Many thanks for those suggestions - been there done (some of) that; there are no Cadwells baptised in Eaton Socon in the period before 1810. Linking John with the Biggleswade baptism would be the problem.
