View Full Version : How Do I search TNA for a Divorce?

I wonder if someone can help me, please? I'm trying to trace a divorce / annullment. It will be dated in the range1880-1895. I know the names of the husband and wife and the date of their marriage.

I've been on the National Archives website but was bewildered by all the titles and (to me) gobbledygook. Is there somewhere I can get to a search screen to put in their names and search for a record? I've seen several posts on here that suggest it must be possible, but I'm stuck. Assuming I can find a record, how much does it cost to view?

Thanks

John

This research guide explains how to do it. When you search the catalogue
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

enter J 77 as the Department or Series Code

Thank you for that - most helpful. Can I assume that annulments are in the same place as divorces? (Whatever the difference is!)

It's jut that the family story is that my great-great-grandparents' marriage was annulled and she re-married. I've found both marriages but not the annulment (or divorce) and there's no trace of his death (the story is that he went off to America after the birth of the second child, so I wouldn't expect to find it).

Very odd

The research guide itself seems to have gone missing from the message I posted. Sorry. This is the URL -

There is a paragraph on annulments.
