Hello all,

I am trying to find out about Richard Cloake, Retired Publican b.1822 Eastborne, Sussex.

I think he may of died Dec 1886 at Poplar 1C 425. age 63

On the 1881 census he is living at 122 Kerbey St, London, Middlesex.

Head - Henry R. Cloake, b.Marylebone, Middlesex. age 35, Dock attendant.
Henry Richard Cloake b.Mar 1846 Marylebone, 140
Henry Richard Cloake d. Mar 1899 Poplar, age 53 1C 402

Wife - Martha E. Cloake, b.Sudbury, Suffork. about 1849 age 32.
Martha Elizabeth Rouse b.1850, Sudbury XII 485.

Son - Henry J. Cloake, b.Limehouse, Middlesex. age 10 Scholar.
Henry John Cloake b. Mar 1871, Stepney 1C 546
Henry John Cloake m. June 1896, Poplar 1C 1070

Daur - Lilian Martha Cloake, b.Poplar, Middlesex. age 5 Scholar.
Lilian Martha Cloake, b.1875, Poplar 1C 701
Lilian Martha Cloake, m. Albert Charles Greagsbey Mar 1900, Chelsea 1A 512

Daur - Florence L. Cloake, b.Bromley, Middlesex. age 1.
Florence Lousia Cloake b. Poplar June 1880, 1C 667.
Florence Lousia Cloake d.Poplar Dec 1900 age 20 1C 369.

Father - Richard Cloake, b.1822 Eastborne, Sussex. age 59 Retired Publican.

Albert Charles Greagsbey & Lilian Martha Cloake are my Great Grandparents.
So far i have a far bit of knowledge on them, but I would like to know more about the Cloake's or Richard Cloake, b.1822 Eastborne, Sussex. age 59 Retired Publican, But where ? what was the name of the pub ?

Try to locate him in earlier censuses which might give the name of the pub. When you have the district you can also check trade directories.

Try these 1871 census RG10 piece 106 folio 5 page 3 and 1861 census the Maidens Head Inn Uckfield - RG09 piece 576 folio 4 page 1 - look like your man (the only Richard Cloake listed on the censuses - if only mine were that easy!)

If he was a publican in 1871, there is also the possibility of searching licensing records. The 1872 Act led to registers being kept of licenses issued. Registers may or may not have survived for the right period and the right district.
