Is there any indexes online for Police in Argyllshire about 1840-1860 or could someone point me in the direction of where to go for this?.

All Police records for Strathclyde and its former constabularies are held at the Glasgow City Archives As your man served more than 75 years ago those records are open to the public you need to go to http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/
and follow the links from there.

I doubt you will be able to view online but you might be able to request a search
