I am researching my family tree and I have come up against a brick wall trying to find out about a couple of my ancestors.

Thomas William Paulo Ellsey b 1813
Thomas William Paulo Place b 1854

Family stories say that these two were linked to the circus/acting/showman
but I cannot find any records.

The name Paulo is not a family name and I was wondering if it was a stage name. Also family stories say that Thomas William Paulo Place was a clown called Boppo.

I have not found any real evidence of this.

Can anyone help.

Sue

Do you have any idea of an area Sue? They should be in the census somewhere.

There is a site on the Internet but I cannot find it at the moment, google might ;) that has extracted lists of showmen and circus people in the census.

There is also a Paulo Circus, which is still going strong. Any connection to that?

There is a Henry T. Paulo in the 1881 census married to Ada.
He is a Comedian/Actor and she is a dancer.

She was born Hull 1854 and he in Marylebone in 1841 but they were living in Lambeth. Relations?

Added to this there was a Clara Paulo, circus performer and proprietor, 1921-2001, from the Lincs area. Her obituary is online, on The Independents website (I haven't posted a link as I am unsure if I am allowed to).

If the family are showmen then the Showman's Guild and the World's Fair publication are the organisations to contact.

Thank you for all this help. I will follow up some of the sites you gave me.
My Thomas William Paulo Ellsey, Thomas William Paulo Ellsey and Thomas William Paulo Place were all born in Marylebone in 1813.1834 and 1853 respectively.
