CHALMERS, stirling

Looking for information regarding Andrew CHALMERS. Believe he resided at Baker Street, stirling in 1886.
Married Jane DRYSDALE in Stirling that same year.

Checked the 1881 census and a bit unclear about whether Andrew was still in area.
Does anyone else have access to 1871 census?
Think Andrew was born around 1863.

also looking for info on Jane too.

had a quick look but could not find anything for an andrew chalmers for abt 8 yrs old. Possibly there was a transcription error on the surname (spelt incorrectly) or if he has other names (middle), quite possible that his other name was used. They did that a lot to evade the law or dissappear/hide for some reason.

Managed to find Andrew CHALMERS. He did indeed reside in Baker St at time of census.
Unfortunately cna't get more details for Jane DRYSDALE. Managed to obtain copy marriage cert but mother details are very faded and difficult to read.

Fathers name is David DRYSDALE (deceased at time of marriage). Mothers name appears to be Helen???? Possibly Lyle. As i said i am not sure aobut that at all. I seem to read it differently every time.

Jane DRYSDALE address on marriage cert was also Baker Street.The witness was a Marion DRYSDALE (possible sister maybe)

If anyone can help me with anything further i would be very grateful.

There is a Jean (interchangeable with Jane) Drysdale born to David D. and Helen Fyfe 9 June 1862 in Fossaway & Tullibole, Kinross, which isn't that far from Stirling, in the extracted records section of the IGI. This seems likely to be her.
I would go into Scotland's people and look for her death certificate - women are indexed by both surnames, so you can generate a list of all women of the right age over a range of years (I generally search from the birth of the last child I know of to age 100) with each surname and then look for apparent duplicate entries. You can then download that cert and see who the parents are/were.
Alternatively, check the 1891 census on Scotland's people for a household with Andrew and Jane Chalmers of the ages you have for them +/- 2 years or so. It'll give you their birth parishes.

It certainly looks more like Fyfe on marriage cert than Lyle.

Hi Lorna,

Been digging about and you are right, that is the same family,
Have been getting a long a bit better and managed to get a little bit more aobut David DRYSDALE but haven't found anything else about Helen FYFE as yet(name very common).

Just to update
Davids parents were Adam DRYSDALE & Ann DRYSDALE, they married 1792, Clakcmannan and had the following children
John, (married Margaret Stewart), Adam, George, and above mentioned David.
All i know about Helen is she was born 1828 Perth. Not a lot really!

hi amanda, not sure if you have this info or not....

there is a possible death for helen fyfe on scotlands people website. - i havent viewed it as i had no credits, (sorry) but the search criteria i used were as follows:


i didnt put in any counties, etc.
helen fyfe other surnames drysdale. 1912. aged 80yrs

- only 3 years out on age given in 1881 census, so quite a good possibility. if it is her, you would get both her parents names including her mother's maiden surname.

I hadn't tried that yet, don't know why really, it seems most obvious doesn't it!!

Anyway i will be renewing my credits again when i have all my information ready so i will check that then!
