1861 Census return
Class: RG9; Piece: 1266; Folio: 55; Page: 4; Hopton Suffolk

I need help to decipher the birthplace of Elizabeth Jolly b 1789(4th from bottom of page)

It is transcribed as St Maycades at Elean but I have been able to locate neither church or village with a name that comes within cooee of the transcription. It may be St Margaret or St Mary something.

Can someone please help me with this one??

with thanks, Sandra

What awful writing!

I think that it is meant to read St Margaret at Elmham. Perhaps the clerk could not read the original very well in the first instance!

Sandra,

A second thought that it could also read St Mary at the Elms (Ipswich). So it would be worth following up both South Elmham and Ipswich.

Could it be St Margarets at Clear/Clere/Clare or even Cleve? By the way, FMP has the surname transcribed as Jolling.

Just seen Jenni's posts and would add the possibility of St Margaret at Elam.
