I have been tracing my tree for some time now but have some blanks. I am trying to find the father of James STEEL, born Arthuret, Cumberland in about 1866. I have his marriage certificate which shows his father's name as David, ocupation shepherd. It may be that David STEEL hails from Scotland as one of James's children also named David was born there. I haven't had any joy yet as STEEL appears to be quite common in Scotland. Neither have I been able to find James's birth certificate. Any suggestions please?

FreeBMD has this birth reg

James William STEELE,
March quarter 1864, Longtown reg district (Arthuret is in that district)
Volume 10b, page 423
(I have not checked the image to see if that is correct)

I find him in Arthuret in 1891 (identified by his son David born Scotland) and he is 27, so the 1864 birth could be his. He has lost a few years by the 1901 census.

Thanks Christine. The next step will be to order the birth certificate and see where I go from there. I had him on the census but couldn't find him further back.

I couldn't find him further back either, nor David.

From memory, there was a 48 year old James Steele and family in 1871 - in Brampton I think it was - with a 15 year old James. That James snr was born in Arthuret, so may possibly be a relation. If you get stuck you could try seeing if that fellow is connected, maybe David's brother.
