Hi,
If you consider the modern wedding is typically planned for a Saturday, rarely a Sunday, sometimes Friday but less so for other weekdays.....
..... does anybody know when the "usual" late Victorian (1890-1900) wedding took place?
Thanks,
Nick

Hi,
For a lot of people, particularly those in service, a good day to get married was Christmas Day or Boxing Day - something to do with having a day off work.

I hadn't thought of that !! I was wondering whether weekday weddings were more unusual than weekends or whether Sunday was more acceptable than today.

In a parish register I happen to have open before me :), looking at three pages at random in 1872 there were seven marriages on a Sunday, three on a Saturday and one each on a Tuesday and a Thursday.
Much too small a sample to draw any conclusions from, obviously.

Hi
I think many Victorian marriage dates were at the order of the vicar especially if his parish was quite big and populous.

That's an interesting set of numbers for UpHolland.
None on either a Sunday or Friday. I guess Saturday still seems most popular though.
A marriage I'm interested in which took place in Salford 1898 was on a Thursday which struck me as a little odd.
All very interesting.... Thank you

Out of curiosity I thought I'd check the marriage certs that I have an found
Monday 24th May 1847
Tuesday 29th Dec 1874
Thursday 12th Dec 1839
Saturday 19th Sep 1896 (Registry Office)
Sunday 27th May 1849
Wednesday 23rd Jun 1852.
I am amazed that I have 6 marriage certificates for different lines in my family and they are for six different days. I only need Friday and I'll hacve a complete set|laugh1|
