Hi
Which census have you found them in to give us a time line. Have you got 1871 with them together or is she on her own.

Census 1871, Mary b 1848 was married to John Izzard in (1868) and Martha b 1851 was living with sister Mary and John Izzard. Martha b 1851 died June 1876. Matthew b 1852 was a visitor at Elizabeth Blands in Hitchin and Elizabeth b 1855 was in Hitchin Workhouse Thanks

He wouldn't have gone to London for anything would he? The death for Joseph Clark Hitchen is 1888. There is also one in 1905 in Royston Herts and one in Ware is 1880 and there is one in Islington in 1866. of a Joseph Clark aged 40... but she was still married whilst in the workhouse in 1971 so where was he in 1971 if not dead.
Hopefully Sandy has found something.

sorry I got interrupted

Martha's children
Mary 48
Martha 50
Mathew 54
Elizabeth 56

So assuming he is still alive when Elizabeth was born 1856

Just been having a look at the 1861 Census Martha with 3 children says she is married not that she is a widow. 1871 Census she is a widow.

So did he die or did he go off elsewhere maybe to look for work etc.

Looking at the actual Census page for 1861 their is only 1 husband at home all the other households only have male children.

Also if someone is missing or you don't know where they are after 7 years you can presume they are dead.

Just something to think about

I have presumed he was dead before Martha died in June 1877 as it states on death cert that she was widow of Joseph Clark. Have also tryed Clarke with the "e" for Hitchin for before 1877 but still not correct. I have thought of ordering Mary's marriage cert to John Izzard in the hopes that it may have wether Joseph is dead or alive. A bit of a long shot but you never no. Thanks Becky

Just looked at the 1871 census she says she is still married.(sorry I said she was widowed in my other post)

She died in 1877 still in the workhouse that's a long time in the workhouse but not impossible.

Just a suggestion but I'd be inclined to look for the workhouse records to see what they have to say.

Sandy,
Does it not say"married" when she is the Union Ippollitus workhouse on the 1871 census? so if she was married to him where was he and why was she in the workhouse on her own.
7 years later she dies a widow. Could he have left her and taken up with someone else. There are deaths in various places for Josephs clarks of roughly the age but none may be him if he was still alive in 1877. M

I have Elizabeth's birth cert she was born 4 April 1855 Back Street Hitchin. And her death cert 1906 Hitchin Union Workhouse . I did find on IGI records a Noah Clarke b 1857 d 1858 and Sarah Clark b 1859, and Sarah Clark b 1849 d 1849 all Hitchin with parents Joseph and Martha Clark, but have been unable to place these in tree. From census it looks though he was missing/dead between 1861 and 1871. Would he have been sent to war?

I think Britain declared war on Russia in 1854 " The Crimean War" and the war finnished in 1856, unless he was a "beam me up Scottie" job. well you never no. Will get back to the death records and see what else i can find. Thanks everyone for help Becky

Hi Sandy, I have been in contact with Beds Record Office who are saying we need The National Archive at Kew to find any Military Records. I have also checked Bedford Gaol records and no Joseph. I have e-mailed Herts Record Office to see if they can look for gaol records in their area, and am waiting for a response.
In the mean time i have looked for Joseph's parents in case he was there, but it looks that his father John must have died between 1851&61 and his mother Elizabeth is shown as a widow on 1861 census. Will try over weekend to find some of his siblings.
Yes i think i will also ask Herts Record Office to check the Workhouse as Martha and daughter Elizabeth Clark were there in 1871 (Elizabeth has a 4 month old baby Sarah Clark) and they are not listed together.
Anyway many thanks Becky
