I've been googling fo hours trying to come up with an answer as to why there was such a conclave of Brits in Bruges in the first quarter/half of the 19th Century.

I found some names on Google Books in -

The Topographer and Genealogist by John Gough Nichols 1853

Page 137
Sepulchral memorials of the English at Bruges
In the church of the Austin Nuns

Lady Margaret Augusta Dillon widow of Luke Dillon and her son Henry Luke Dillon are both buried there but as to why?????????

Any help would be appreciated.

What goes around come around. I am responsible for running off the labels for a FHS journal, and each quarter the number we have to post to France goes up.

Thankyou Sue

History repeating itself then as it always does!
Many thanks.

Hi Eileen,
You should e-mail the "Rijksarchief te Brugge", they hold all PR's and much more, so if you wish to obtain death entries and burial details they are where you should be!

State archives in Bruges
Academiestraat, 14-18
8000 BRUGES
West Flanders

If you get PR's or any docs in Dutch/Flemish I can translate for you.

Good luck.:)

Hi Dutchy

Apologies for the delay in responding - I've been away - again!

Thank you so much for that. I have just written and am keeping my fingers crossed that they can help. I believe it is a beautiful city and as we have never been, we are now arranging a weekend trip for later in the year. I will certainly take you up on your offer of a translation if the need arises!

Again, many thanks.

Hi Eileen
I am also researching the 'Dillon' family for my mother in law's family tree - did you receive a response from the State Archives in Bruges?
Also, do you know anything more about Henry Luke Dillon?
Many thanks
Sarah

HI Sarah

I wrote to the Archive in Bruge on 06 June but have not yet had a reply. These things can often take weeks so I will wait for a while before chasing them.

I have quite a bit of information on the family and will pm you.

Eileen
