Managed to get a brick out of the wall but found another behind it. Thanks to a suggestion by Sandyhall, we have founs my Gt Grandmothers maiden name, Gillam, sadly we now find that she was brought up in the Jersey Orphans home in Grouville. Is there any way of getting past this. Also still can't trace Gt Grandpa, although we now know that in 1878 he was a private in the 29th Foot Regiment. Can anyone help ?

Caroline GILLAM 15
Alice GILLAM 13
Inmates in Grouville Orphan Home, born St.Helier

Am transferring this to the Channel Islands forum, as you might get more specialist help there.

Would that be Caroline Sophia Gillam?

Also, what was G G Grandfather's name?

Where did they marry?

Stewart. Lucinda had another thread (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43540) on brickwalls which led her to this one.

Aah, I see now!

In that case, next week I shall:

1. Try to find the birth of Catherine Gillam
2. Look at Admission Register for the Jersey Female Orphans Home (which is the correct name for the Grouville Orphans Home).
3. Try to find a marriage for Catherine Gillam and William Henry Lowden.

It will have to wait until next week as the Archive Centre is closed until Tuesday.

Hello Sue, thank you for replying, your information on Caroline does match my Gt Grandma who appears in the 1891 cencus at 34, married to William Henry Lowden. How do I take this further >

Hi Luicinda

I have some of the answers.

The births are registered in St Helier.

Alice Gillam, 22nd March 1858 to 28th May 1859, volume 15, page 41
Caroline Sophia Gillam, 28th August 1854 to 19th October 1855, volume 12, page 82

I looked in Admissions Register for the two girls at the Orphanage but there was no mention of them. I checked with the Archivist and she tells me that if they stayed only a couple of days they may not have been admitted. Also, the home was used as a training place for domestic staff, so her parents could well have paid for them to attend.

I still have to look for a marriage but someone was using the index and I ran out of time.

Hello again Stewart,
Thank you very much for your information and the work you've done, We can now try to trace Caroline and Alice through census details The birth date for Caroline is close enough to be a good match for her being 34 in the 1891 census. Curiously the 1891 and 1901 never suggested that she was Caroline Sophia. Also, we're very curious why, in your first posted reply, you asked if we were referring to Caroline Sophia Gillam, do you know something we don't? Very much looking forward to hearing more from you

Hi Lucinda

The Archive Centre in Jersey has an online site that details what is avilable to view on-site. It is not complete by any means but it's always a good starting point. I went to:

http://jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je/archive.html

and under "Name" keyed in "Gillam, C" - that gave me Caroline Sophia Gillam.

Then you can go to "Detailed Subjects" from the home page and enter "Orphans". That will give you everything available to do with orphanages.

Hope that helps. Ask again if you need help.

PS Certificates from Jersey have just gone up to £20!!

Hi Lucinda

Afraid I can't see a marriage in Jersey for CG and WHL.

Hello again Stewart, Thank you so much for the work you have done. We think that perhaps Caroline and Alice were the children of Charles and Eliza Gillam but we can't link them together The Jersey Website you suggested works but Hangs up our computer when we try to find out more about Caroline. As for Gt Grandpa, he seems not to want to be found. Thanks very much again.
