I wonder if anyone can tell me if the following appear in earlier census returns?

I've a Thomas ALLEN (born about 1847/48) who appears in the 1891 census living with his wife Lavinia ALLEN and family:

Thomas ALLEN aged 17
Blanch ALLEN aged 15
Percy ALLEN aged 13
Gilbert ALLEN aged 11
Archibald ALLEN aged 5
Elsie ALLEN aged 2
Reginald ALLEN aged 3mnts

All resided 28 North Sherwood St, Nottingham (Thomas was a beerhousekeeper at the Duke of St Albans public House).

Also needed is any further info on Edwin Thomas KERRY born abt 1868 in Radford Nottingham. At the time of the 1911 census he was living with his wife Mary Jane KERRY at 22 Myrtle Grove, Beeston, Notts with the following children all born in the Nottingham area:

Annie Davis Twist, aged 19
Edwin Samuel KERRY aged 17 born Sneinton, Notts
Florrie KERRY aged 15
Lizzie KERRY aged 12
William KERRY aged 10
Ivy KERRY aged 8
Joseph KERRY aged 2
George KERRY aged 1 born Stapleford Notts

Many thanks for any help/info! :)

I've looked for Edwin on the 1891 Census and can't find him, nor can I find a marriage for him and Mary Jane. In 1881 there is an Edwin Kerry born in Radford, Notts, living with his parents Joseph and Matilda which corresponds to his year of birth on the 1901 Census. There is a corresponding birth registration, but no mention of the name Thomas:

Name: Edwin Kerry
Year of Registration: 1869
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Radford
County: Nottinghamshire
Volume: 7b
Page: 174

This might prove useful to you:

From the Notts FHS Baptismal Index:

Born 3 October 1891, baptised 20 December 1891 at St Peter Nottingham Ann Davis TWIST, daughter Mary TWIST

Born 11 April 1908, baptised 25 October 1908 at St Peter Nottingham Joseph TWIST, son Joseph KERRY & Mary TWIST, 22 Lomas Yard. These baptisms are both recorded under the mother's name of TWIST.

I wonder if the latter baptism should be father Edwin - it does seem rather a coincidence - and that Edwin & Mary Jane never married. I can't find a marriage for them on the Notts FHS Marriage Index. Will investigate further after lunch!!

Thanks Pottoka- that's really helpful.

Janet- funnily enough I was just going to post that I couldn't find the marriage record of Edwin and Mary. Thanks for looking into this- it has me baffled!

This looks as though it could be Joseph's marriage to Matilda:

Notts FHS Marriage Index
15 July 1850 at Radford Joseph KERRY & Matilda SWAN. This marriage has been registered at Radford reg district in the September qtr 1850, vol 15, page 881 so purchasing the certificate will give you the father's name & profession of both bride and groom.

The only Matilda SWAN I can find on the Baptismal Index is one baptised on 23 November 1828 at St Mary Nottingham, father John, mother Mary, of Millstone Lane, Cordwainer.

I can't find John, Mary or Matilda on the 1841 census, but there is a burial of a John SWANN at Nottingham St Mary on 17 September 1837, aged 56, Pipe St which could be relevant.

There are the following baptisms for the children of Thomas & Lavinia:

Baptised 6 Apr 1883 at Nottingham St Thomas, Lilian Alexandrina dau Thomas Arthur & Lavinia A Mary ALLEN, Parliament St, Grocer
Born 26 Feb 1884, bap 2 Apr 1884 at Nottingham St Thomas, Thomas Arthur Allen son Thomas Arthur and Lavinia A ALLEN, 40 Market St, Grocer
Born 6 Dec 1885, bap 2 May 1886 at Nottingham St Thomas, Blanch Lavinia dau Thomas Arthur & Lavina A ALLEN, 40 Market St, Grocer
Bap 5 Feb 1888 at Nottingham St Thomas, Percy, son Thomas Arthur & Lavinia A ALLEN, 49 Parliament St, Grocer
Born 24 Sep 1889, bap 3 Jul 1895 at Nottingham Holy Trinity, Gilbert son Thomas Arthur & Lavinia A Mary ALLEN, 28 Sherwood St, Publican
Born 17 Jan 1891, bap 11 Apr 1893 at Nottingham Holy Trinity, Harold Archibald son Thomas Arthur & Lavinia Alexandrin ALLEN, 2 Sherwood St, Publican
Born 30 Jan 1894, bap 11 Apr 1894 at Nottingham Holy Trinity, Gladys G Louisa dau Thomas Arthur & Lavinia Alexandrin ALLEN, 28 Sherwood St, Publican
Borbn 26 May 1895, bap 3 Jul 1895 at Nottingham Holy Trinity, Archibald James son Thomas Arthur & Lavinia A Mary ALLEN, 28 Sherwood St, Publican
Born 26 Dec 1897, bap 9 Feb 1898 at Nottingham Holy Trinity, Frank Reginald son Thomas Arthur & Lavinia A Mary ALEN, 28 Sherwood St, Beerhouse Keeper
Born 18 Mar 1899, bap 7 Jun 1899 at Nottingham Holy Trinity, Elsie Eliza dau Thomas Arthur & Lavinia Alexandrin ALLEN, 28 Sherwood St, Beerhouse Keeper

There is a marriage registration at Nottingham reg district in the December qtr 1880, vol 7b, page 604 of an Arthur Thomas ALLEN and a Lavinia Alexandrina M GREENSMITH.

HTH, although I still cannot find a marriage for Edwin & Mary!!

Thank you! I have a whole host of certificates to order now and with each one no doubt another mystery will unfold! Thanks again.

Another certificate arrived today from another branch of the tree (I should probably just order one or two certificate's at a time!) and I have another name to check out. I've found the reference to be able to order Elizabeth Kate MATTHEWS birth certificate in 1895 and have found the reference for her marriage certificate in Jun 1916 to Eustace Edgell, both list Basford as the place name but I cannot find her at all in the 1911 census- it looks as though the Notts 1911 details are complete though?

Have just found a marriage cert for Edwin and Mary J Twist- in 1913! I am now getting confused over which Edwin is which and whose Twist is who! Off for a cuppa I think!

After double checking it is the correct Edwin KERRY. I thought for a moment it could have been his son's marriage however, I've his son, Edwin Samuel KERRY's marriage certificate to a Ethel Harriet Patient in 1920 so it can't be. I guess they were just a little slow at getting round to things!

Well at least you eventually found their marriage, Firebird!!

This looks as if it could be the baptism of your Elizabeth Kate MATTHEWS:

Born 13 Feb, bap 21 Apr 1895 at Nottingham St Barnabus RC, Elizabeth Catherine MATHEWS, dau Benjamin & Elizabeth, nee O'BRIEN, Beeston

Also:

Born 28 Dec 1887, bap 25 Feb 1894 at Nottingham St Barnabus RC, Leonard MATHEWS, son Benjamin & Elizabeth nee O'BRIAN, Beeston

Elizabeth Catherine is in the 1911 census, in Basford district presumably at Beeston, but under Kate MATTHEWS, aged 16, born Beeston - they don't make it easy for us do they!!

This looks like her family in the 1891 census of Beeston (RG12/2671, folio 83, page 22) and it looks as if she has Irish ancestry - lucky you!!

2 Victoria Terrace

Benjamin MATTHEWS Head M 41 Labourer General Ludlow Salop
Elizabeth do Wife M 30? Athlone Ireland
James do Son 10 Scholar Derby
Benjamin do do 8 do do
Annie do Daur 5 do do
Leonard do Son 3 Beeston Notts

HTH further and good luck!!

Oh Jan- thank you! I've been driving myself crazy thinking of all the different varients of Elizabeth! My nan spoke of a connection to the O'Briens in Ireland when I was a child and this is great to see confirmation of it- thanks again!

Thank you! :D

The next piece of the jigsaw will have to wait until I get hold of O'Brien/Matthews marriage certificate . I spoke to my mum last night who thinks Elizabeth or 'Bridget' O'Brien wasn't sure of her birthdate (which would explain the question mark on the census data) only that she was born on the 'night of the big wind'. After looking that up it appears she would have been a lot older than 30! The night of the big wind was 6th/7th January 1839. Perhaps my mum is getting confused and is referring to the previous generation. This only adds to the intrigue! Thanks again,

Theresa
