When enlisting in WW1, did a private need to give next of kin information? More importantly, would this still exist and if so, where?
I would be grateful for any assistance.
Thanks

This should be recorded on his service record - unfortunately the majority were destroyed or damaged in a fire in WW2. However, it may still be worth checking the records held at The National Archives at Kew just in case your chap's survived.
TNA has a number of online research guides which you migth try browsing - see their website
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
move your cursor over 'Getting Started' in the red band near the top of the page and from teh drop down menu select 'Index to research guides' - clcik on the letter 'B' and scroll down to the files beginning with 'British Army....'

One thing I forgot to mention previously - if the chap died in WW1 then check the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website
http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx
as next-of-kin are frequently mentioned there.
