Hello lesourn19 - welcome to Brit-Gen

I have slid this post over to the Boer War forum, so that it attracts the attention of people researching that area.

Meanwhile, have a look at these TNA research guides (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1#b), which may help. Click on the ones that start "British Army".

See the above - also........

The GRO Natal Deaths Index 1899-1902 can be searched on pay-per-view sites such as 'findmypast' and 'TheGenealogist' - if you can identify an entry there you may apply for a copy of the death certifiacte via the GRO.

Note that the Natal Deaths Index records those named by Surname, Initial(s), a commissioned rank is included for officers, regiment, page number.

6229 Gunner J. Oliver, 53rd Battery Royal Field Artillery, died of disease at Wynberg, Cape Town 28/11/1899. He is buried at St. Johns Cemetery, Wynberg. No grave marker survives but his name is commemorated on the cemetery memorial.

He was entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasp Natal.

He was a very early disease casualty and he must have fallen ill while serving with the battery south of Estcourt, Natal. He was most likely scheduled to be invalided home but was disembarked at Cape Town and hospitalised in Wynberg where there was a big military hospital. Enteric fever (typhoid) or dysentery were the biggest killers but my references don't specify.

The 53rd Battery was besieged in Ladysmith at the time of his death but he would not have seen any action during his short period of service in South Africa.

The papers of regular soldiers who died on service were officially destroyed decades ago so the above is as much as you're likely to find on him.

There is no G. or A. Oliver shown as died/killed in the casualty roll but 'In Memoriam' shows a Driver A. Oliver, 22nd Co. Army Service Corps as died of an unspecified cause at Fort Napier Stationary Hospital, Pietermaritzburg 15/2/1903 which was 9 months after the end of the war. He is buried at Fort Napier Cemetery and his grave is marked with a named metal cross. He was 28 and his religion was CofE. This may be one of his brothers but the above information is also as much as you're likely to get on this man.

Hi: Jan;Geoffers;

Been reading the posts and wonder if you or anyone out there can
look up an item for this period;-

I am looking for my 'lost-cousin' "John Kirkwood Thomson" he may have

and served in 'S/Africa'-Boer War',,,

He married 'Mary Blair Hume' 7Sept/1893 Tradeston,Glas/Scot and I can
find no trace of him till wife 'Mary' appears on '1901 Cen/Kirkden/Arbroath'

"Edward Mills Petrie" 28thSept,Maryhill/Dist/Barony Par;

"John K.Thomson" died somewhere between '1893-1901'
