Witham Union Workhouse

My Gr Gr Grandfather George Dace was in the Witham Workhouse in 1861 does anybody have any information about this place? Is it still standing?

Hi Alex,

If you visit workhouses.org.uk and follow the links in the sidebar on the left of the site, you will come to the Witham workhouse. There is a fair bit of history about the place, as well as photographs of the various buildings.

Although not many records survive, the Guardians Minutes from 1835-1883 are held at the Essex Records Office (http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/dis/guc.jsp?channelOid=13813&guideOid=14788&guideContentOid=14816) in Chelmsford.
