In the 1851 census for Northumberland I have an ancestor (John Turnbull), giving his place of birth as Dunse, Scotland, age 50. He was a potter and family story is that he was a "specialist" in colouring pottery. Did Scotland have the same rules as England regarding apprentices in the 19C? He must have been apprenticed to someone in the trade. If apprenticeship indentures applied where does one find them?
He did not move to Yorkshire until 1828-1830, so was a tradesman before he left Scotland.

Brian...you are SO lucky, we have ancestors in Northumberland who CONSISTENTLY state Scotland (and nothing else) as their place of birth ...grrr! (Sorry, that doesn't help you one little bit, I realise. I'm just having a whinge.) This post will at least bump you up to the top of the list for a while!
