I have found a John Bolitho who in 1871 was a prisoner in Carisbrooke, Parkhurst, Isle of Wight and in 1881 was a prisoner in HM Convict Prison, Princetown, Dartmoor. He was born in 1829 in Bristol, married and his occupation was a Ship Carpenter. His wife and family were living in Bristol in 1871 And 1881

Does anyone know where I would be able to find out details of his crime or crimes. I'm not sure if he was released from the Isle of Wight and then committed another crime or if it was all the same offence.

Hello Mary,

Parkhurst Prison has a museum, which is run by two prison officers, operating independently of the Prison Service. Maybe they would also be able to help. Contact them via: wightonline.co.uk/parkhurst-heritage/
