Does anyone have any information about either the Angel or the Red Lion pubs in Kniveton, Derbyshire for the period when John Baker was the Landlord between 1890 to 1901?

Hello Antony - welcome to Brit-Gen,

I have just had a quick google and the Red Lion at least is still in existence.

One route to follow:

Contact the pub and find out if it is managed or a Free House. If it is managed, contact the brewery archives to see what records they hold. If it is a Free House, then the landlord/lady may have information on the history of the place.

Another route:

Have a word with the Derbyshire Records Office (http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/visitor_information/default.asp) to see what information they hold. They should have directories of the times, which may even have advertisements for the pubs therein.

Good luck!

Have a look at the licensing records at Derbyshire CRO. The Licensing Registers are very easy to work through. Among other things you can track the movements of publicans between pubs and of course find out the owner of the pub.
