on the 1861 census my g-g grandfather (James hutton) is listed as Geom of Signals - can anyone explain what this means?

I am unable to help, but thought that I would post the census reference to help others find it: RG9; Piece: 4440; Folio: 122; Page: 5

He is on the second line down and is a member of the crew of the "Racoon", which is at anchor under Mount Carmel, East of Syria. The census is from the 1861 Enumeration Book of the Royal Navy.

In view of this last point, the abbreviation being listed under his "Rank or Quality", I am moving the thread to the Navy forum in the hope that someone with better knowledge of Naval titles can pick up on this. :)

Geomn should read Yeomn of signals. Hope this helps.

I think it should be Yeom (Yeoman) of Signals. I think this equated to Petty Officer.
