I have had terrible trouble trying to find anything detailed about this ship which was torpedoed by the Japenese in Java Waters 6.30am 4th March 1942.
I tried googling and no pictures and I couldnt find any close ups of the Chatham Naval Memorial which lists the fellow (James W Kent) I am trying to find more about.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Anking was hired by the RN for use as a Depot Ship. Try leaving out the HMS and use SS instead, or just "ships" "anking". The convoy was escorted by HMAS Yarra and there is quite a bit of info on the web,eg
http://www.ww2australia.gov.au/waratsea/lostG.html if that takes you to the first page (I haven't tried from here yet) go to page 3.

PS Just tried it, you will have to go to page 3.

1. See Peter's reply above

2. If you can get to The National Arhives at Kew, they have some records relating to HMS ANKING (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=anking&txtfirstdate=1940&txtlastdate=1945&txtrestriction=adm&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=31&image1.y=6) (as per Peter's suggestion, if looking for a ship on TNA's catalogue, first try just the name, leave out the HMS).

This site has pictures:

photoship.co.uk/

Click on "Search the old ship picture galleries" then on "Old Ships A" on the right. This takes a while to load so be patient. :)
