Hi everyone

I have an image on my computer that I found on the net somewhere, somewhen, which I saved in case it was connected to my research, which says GOODRIDGE Martha of tp Wm COGAN xxxx. The bottom line says Taunton then probably St Jas then 15 then a gap then 1790. It is obviously an index for the marriage but who was it by. Any ideas. The reason I am trying to find out is thatI have a Martha Goodridge Cogan born 1833 and the chances that they are connected are very good. Her parents were William and Maria Cogan and her brother was William Arthur and virtually every generation had William as a first name, even to this day. If anyone can tell me what this index is I'd be most greatful.

Possibly the Somerset Marriage Index?

The GENUKI transcripts for that period only cover marriages at St Mary Mag's, not St James, so that would be my best guess.

Cheers

I am descended from Cogans of Bristol - though not your line. Looking through our research we have details of your Martha on copies of census's.

1841 Census - Bristol (St. Augustine the Less - area)
Living at Avon Street, Bristol (Hotwells area)

William Cogan
Head (Father) Age 40 (actual age 44 - born in 1797)
Butcher (not born in this county)

Maria Cogan
Mother Age 30 (not born in this county)

Martha Daughter Age 8 (not born in this county)

William Son Age 2 (not born in this county)

1851 Census - Bristol (St. Augustine the Less - area)
Living at Frog Lane, Bristol (City Centre area)

William Cogan
Head (Father) Age 54
Butcher (born Taunton)

Martha (Daughter) Age 18

You may have this info already but if not hope it is of use.

Best regards,

Hello Angie-C

I do have those entries but thank you for your reply. Do any of your Cogan's come from Taunton? as William Cogan who married Martha Goodridge had brothers called Lewis and San(d)ford.
